Devilman Crybaby Review - Maybe Netflix Got This Right...

Updated: May 28, 2021

Notice:This is not an anime for everyone, at times it is hyper sexual, ultra violent, or both. With that out of the way lets take a closer look.

Ths anime is a Netflix original adaptation of the 1970s manga Devilman, that was released January 2018. This anime is able to provide a great blend of action, dark fantasy and interesting looking demons with the abstract ideas of change and love. It follows the story of Akira Fudo, a high school student, and his mysterious childhood friend Ryo Asuka. Akira is a lonely 16 year old who has a kind, pure, trusting heart and is described to be a crybaby. Ryo is a child prodigy and is a respectable professor in the United States, he has a personality completely contrasting Akira’s.

The world featured in Devilman crybaby is under attack by demons hiding in plain sight and Ryo believes that the only way for humans to keep existing is to expose these demons. For this plan of his he asks for his friend Akira’s help, who ends up combining with the demon Amon to become the Devilman. This send Akira into a spiral of dark, brutal and monstrous events to combat evil.

Devilman Crybaby’s overall storyline could be depressing but its balanced out by the well written characters and how love and compassion play a central role in the decisions made by these characters. This anime has a very unique, rather refreshing and trippy art style. This is accompanied by catchy soundtracks which fit perfectly with the dark themes of the anime. The fact that Devilman Crybaby features openly LGBT characters in an anime not revolving around the love story of a LGBT character is applaudable.

This anime does have graphic content and can be hard to stomach. If you can’t sit through the first episode, then you might want to check out some other series. But if you don’t mind gore then this anime is highly recommended.
